Macumira Treatment for Dry AMD
Dry age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of irreversible central vision loss in people over the age of 60. As the disease progresses, patients may experience difficulty reading, recognizing faces, driving, and performing daily activities.
MacuMira is a Health Canada-authorized, non-invasive therapy for selected patients with dry AMD. It uses gentle transpalpebral microcurrent stimulation delivered through closed eyelids during a comfortable outpatient procedure.

Macular Degeneration
For many years, treatment options focused primarily on slowing disease progression through nutritional supplementation and lifestyle modifications. MacuMira adds a non-invasive treatment option intended to improve visual function in appropriate patients.

How Macumira Works
MacuMira delivers very low levels of electrical current through specially designed eye cups placed over the closed eyelids. The treatment is designed to stimulate retinal cells, particularly the retinal pigment epithelium, supporting mitochondrial activity and cellular energy production.

Clinical Benefits
Clinical studies with microcurrent have demonstrated improvements across several measures of visual performance. Individual results vary and treatment recommendations are based on a full retinal evaluation.
In the pivotal clinical study, treated participants demonstrated measurable improvement in visual function, nearly half gained 10 or more ETDRS letters, and no device-related serious adverse events were reported.
What to Expect
The patient relaxes while gentle microcurrent stimulation is delivered through the eyelids. Most sessions take approximately 32 to 35 minutes.
Is Macumira Right for You?
MacuMira may be appropriate for patients diagnosed with early or intermediate dry AMD, and for selected advanced cases with remaining functional retinal tissue.
Treatment recommendations are individualized according to retinal structure, disease stage, and visual goals.
Our Experience
At our clinic, MacuMira therapy is integrated into a comprehensive low vision rehabilitation program. Patients are followed carefully using objective measurements such as visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, OCT imaging, microperimetry when appropriate, and functional visual assessment.

In an initial series of 40 patients treated for dry AMD, visual acuity improved from approximately 20/100 to 20/63 after 3 sessions, with continued 20/63 results at 1 month and 3 months.
Contrast sensitivity improved from 0.88 to 0.74 after 1 month, corresponding to an improvement of about 1 line.
