Macumira Treatment for Dry AMD

A new non-invasive option for dry macular degeneration

Microcurrent stimulation designed to improve visual function

Dry age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of irreversible central vision loss in people over the age of 60. As the disease progresses, patients may experience difficulty reading, recognizing faces, driving, and performing daily activities.

MacuMira is a Health Canada-authorized, non-invasive therapy for selected patients with dry AMD. It uses gentle transpalpebral microcurrent stimulation delivered through closed eyelids during a comfortable outpatient procedure.

Macular Degeneration

Understanding dry AMD

For many years, treatment options focused primarily on slowing disease progression through nutritional supplementation and lifestyle modifications. MacuMira adds a non-invasive treatment option intended to improve visual function in appropriate patients.

How Macumira Works

Gentle stimulation through the closed eyelids

MacuMira delivers very low levels of electrical current through specially designed eye cups placed over the closed eyelids. The treatment is designed to stimulate retinal cells, particularly the retinal pigment epithelium, supporting mitochondrial activity and cellular energy production.

Clinical Benefits

Measured changes in visual function

Clinical studies with microcurrent have demonstrated improvements across several measures of visual performance. Individual results vary and treatment recommendations are based on a full retinal evaluation.

Function measures

  • Best-corrected visual acuity
  • Contrast sensitivity
  • Functional vision
  • Patient-reported quality of life
  • Reading performance in many patients

Clinical study signals

In the pivotal clinical study, treated participants demonstrated measurable improvement in visual function, nearly half gained 10 or more ETDRS letters, and no device-related serious adverse events were reported.

What to Expect

A comfortable in-office treatment experience

The patient relaxes while gentle microcurrent stimulation is delivered through the eyelids. Most sessions take approximately 32 to 35 minutes.

Evaluation before treatment

MacuMira may be appropriate for patients diagnosed with early or intermediate dry AMD, and for selected advanced cases with remaining functional retinal tissue.

  • Early dry AMD
  • Intermediate dry AMD
  • Selected cases of advanced dry AMD with remaining functional retinal tissue

Treatment recommendations are individualized according to retinal structure, disease stage, and visual goals.

Assessment includes

  • Complete ophthalmic examination
  • OCT imaging
  • Visual acuity assessment
  • Contrast sensitivity testing
  • Retinal function assessment with microperimetry when appropriate

Our Experience

Integrated with low vision rehabilitation

At our clinic, MacuMira therapy is integrated into a comprehensive low vision rehabilitation program. Patients are followed carefully using objective measurements such as visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, OCT imaging, microperimetry when appropriate, and functional visual assessment.

Initial clinical results from Dr. Daibert Nido's office

In an initial series of 40 patients treated for dry AMD, visual acuity improved from approximately 20/100 to 20/63 after 3 sessions, with continued 20/63 results at 1 month and 3 months.

Contrast sensitivity

Contrast sensitivity improved from 0.88 to 0.74 after 1 month, corresponding to an improvement of about 1 line.

How soon can I notice improvement?

Some patients report visual improvements within the first few weeks, although individual responses vary.

Can MacuMira cure macular degeneration?

No. Dry AMD is a chronic disease. MacuMira is intended to improve visual function in appropriate patients as part of an individualized management plan.
